Syrian media outlets are reporting this morning that al-Julani's men have forcibly taken over the Sida al-Zenab shrine on the outskirts of Damascus.
Their goal is to fire all the temple's employees and replace them with Sunni employees loyal to the regime.
The Sida al-Zenab shrine is known for its sanctity to Shiites, and for the past decade the site has been controlled by Iranian proxies backed by Hezbollah and pro-Iranian militias.
In recent days, heated religious arguments have erupted in the mosque between Sunnis and Shiites, and al-Julani has apparently decided to put an end to this, despite his pledge to the Iranian government that the holy sites will not be harmed and that freedom of Shiite worship will be preserved.
