So why is Netanyahu convening an urgent meeting on Syria on Shabbat evening?
1. First of all, Israel has a great interest in what is happening in Syria. From conversations I have had with senior IDF officials in recent hours, it appears that the security establishment is closely following the dramatic events there.
2. The rebels' attack on Hezbollah and the Iranian militias may serve Israeli interests to some extent. Hezbollah and the militias are busy repelling the attack - not preparing for terrorist operations against Israel.
3. In the city of Aleppo, there is a scientific research center for the Assad regime, which is used by the Syrian defense industry and produces weapons. The Syrian rebels have already announced that they have taken control of it. Israel should also closely monitor this matter - because an important asset has fallen into the hands of the rebels.
4. Israel should consider whether it is merely watching from the sidelines what is happening there, or whether this also has an impact on Israel's military operations in Syria. I will expand on this matter later, as much as I can within the limitations of censorship.
