The ceasefire agreement came after a year of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed organization and political party.
The US-brokered agreement is a major victory for Israel, which achieved its main war goals, experts say.
Israel has eroded Hezbollah as a military power as well as a political and economic force in Lebanon.
Israel has also succeeded in severing the linkage between Hezbollah’s rocket and missile attacks on Israel and the war in Gaza. The Iranian-backed group began its attacks shortly after Israel’s air and ground invasion of Gaza in October 2023.
The ceasefire would also end the presence of Hezbollah – a terrorist organization designated by the US, although the European Union has only blacklisted its armed wing – in southern Lebanon, its stronghold. Israel is also required to withdraw its ground forces from Lebanon.
