NEWSRAEL: Erdogan, who is in dire need of foreign cash, is continuing to blackmail Europe by allowing immigrants to flood its borders.
In an official announcement published by the Turkish Immigration Department, the accusations spread by certain media regarding the existence of an agreement between Ankara and London regarding the reception of illegal immigrants were denied.
The statement emphasized that there is no truth in reports claiming the existence of negotiations or agreements between the two countries aimed at reducing the number of illegal immigrants in Great Britain by sending them to Turkey.
In the announcement it was emphasized that there is no basis for such claims. The statement also emphasized Turkey's commitment to informing the public only with correct information, calling on everyone to get news from reliable official sources.
The Turkish denial comes a day after The Times newspaper revealed that the British government appears to be in talks with Turkey, Vietnam and officials in the Iraqi Kurdistan region about potential payments to help slow the flow of migrants and refugees to Britain.
The newspaper quoted Prime Minister Keir Starmer as telling reporters that Britain should discourage people from leaving their countries of origin and making the journey, which often involves crossing the English Channel, which is fraught with danger.
Starmer added to reporters who accompanied him to attend the G20 summit in Brazil that the government has plans to deal with criminal gangs involved in people smuggling. "Anything we can do to prevent people from leaving in the first place is the right thing," he was quoted as saying.
The Times reported that it is understood that Interior Minister Yvette Cooper is in discussions with several governments, including those of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq, Turkey and Vietnam, regarding cooperation and security agreements that could be concluded before the end of the year.
Starmer praised Italy's efforts to tackle illegal immigration during a visit to Rome in September, including its work to prevent migrants from making their journeys.
