The US fears a growing threat from the Afghan affiliate of ISIS
ISIS Khorasan/Khorasan Province has changed its online recruitment tactics, "with the aim of carrying out attacks against the US and other Western countries", according to US security experts.
American officials and analysts emphasize that as early as 2023, the Islamic State branch in Afghanistan increased its recruitment efforts, "launching a sophisticated propaganda campaign designed to convince disgruntled Muslims to carry out terrorist plots in the United States and other Western countries."
In an effort to garner support and attract supporters from various Muslim diasporas in Europe and the US, ISIS's Afghan branch has produced numerous videos and articles in more than a dozen languages, including Dari and Pashto, the two main languages of Afghanistan.
As American experts note, at first the Afghan branch of ISIS "focused on Tajik immigrants in the West", but later "expanded its efforts to other ethnic communities".
Now the Afghan ISIS organization "aims to take advantage of the isolation and alienation experienced by Afghans and other Muslim immigrants and refugees as they try to build lives in unfamiliar and secular societies."
"Online messages sent on social media, TikTok and the Darknet portray ISIS as 'the only true and pure Islamist militant organization fighting against governments in the region and hostile foreign influence from adversaries such as the United States.'
