The New York Times reveals sensitive documentation seized by the IDF from Sinwar's conversations with senior Hamas officials on October 7, about the attempts to convince Iran and Hezbollah to join the war
• Hamas planned to carry out the attack in the fall of 2022, but it was decided to postpone it in an attempt to convince Iran and Hezbollah to join.
• Hamas tried to convince Hezbollah to join the war on the grounds that the internal situation in Israel (against the legal revolution) is a good opportunity.
• In the summer of 2023, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hiya met in Lebanon with senior Quds Force official in the Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Saeed Izadi, and asked him that Iran bomb sensitive sites in Israel at the beginning of the attack.
• Izadi told Al-Hiya that Iran and Hezbollah support the attack in principle, but need more time to prepare for it.
• Hamas decided to go on the attack knowing that Iran and Hezbollah might not join - but did not want to continue delaying so that the attack would start before Israel starts operating an air defense system to intercept missiles and rockets based on laser beams.
• The decision not to postpone the attack any longer is also intended to torpedo the process of normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
• Hamas leaders in Gaza said they informed Ismail Haniya in Qatar about the plans for the attack.
