WATCH: Revolutionizing Dental Care: Israeli Startup Brings AI to Implant Restorations

In the heart of Israel's bustling tech scene, a company that has already transformed lives with its innovations in the field of dental medicine is preparing to unveil its next breakthrough.

Abracadabra, the Israeli dental technology startup founded by Dr. Ian Harel and Dani Younisian, is developing an artificial intelligence-powered system that promises to revolutionize how dental implant restorations are planned and delivered.

The new cloud-based platform, known as AbraCAD, represents a significant leap forward in implant restoration design and planning. Unlike existing dental planning tools, AbraCAD will  automatically integrate multiple sources of patient data - from CT scans to facial scans and intraoral imagery - to create what the company calls a "digital twin" of the patient. This comprehensive approach allows for unprecedented precision in planning both the implant placement and the subsequent prosthetic restoration.

"Current digital solutions in dentistry simply replicate manual workflows in a digital environment," explains Dr. Vladi Dvoyris, the company's Chief Information Officer. "What makes our system unique is its ability to consider the patient's complete anatomical and functional characteristics, automatically calculating optimal implant positions and designing the ideal prosthetic solutions that will be supported by these implants. Instead of sculpting structures in 3D like the good old dental labs, we use precise design strategies adopted from the automotive and aerospace realms."

The development of AbraCAD stems from the same innovative spirit that drove Abracadabra's earlier successes. Dr. Harel, who began his professional journey as one of Israel's first oral implantologists in 1982, recognized a critical gap in implant restoration planning. Despite technological advances, prosthetic failures remained common, often due to inadequate consideration of biomechanical forces in the restorative phase.

The new system will address these challenges by incorporating advanced AI algorithms that analyze patient data to determine ideal implant positioning and prosthetic design. It considers factors such as bone density, bite forces, and anatomical landmarks to create a comprehensive treatment plan that ensures long-term success of both the implants and their restorations.

This systematic approach significantly reduces the risk of prosthetic complications and ensures better outcomes for patients.

What already sets AbraCAD apart from existing dental CAD systems is its ability to automate complex measurements and calculations that traditionally relied heavily on the dentist's and dental technician's experience and intuition. Soon enough, the system would automatically detect and measure critical anatomical features, determine optimal occlusal plane positions, and suggest the most suitable restorative approaches based on the patient's specific conditions.

The system's effectiveness is built upon Abracadabra's pioneering telescopic restoration concept, which has already proven successful in thousands of clinical cases. This unique approach ensures that restorative components remain perfectly parallel to the occlusal plane regardless of the implants' angles, creating a single and definitive path of insertion that aligns with natural biting forces.

By combining this biomechanical principle with digital precision, AbraCAD can predict and control the distribution of occlusal forces across all implants - something that traditional restoration methods, whether digital or analog, have failed to achieve. This predictability in force distribution is crucial for the long-term success of implant-supported restorations and the preservation of surrounding tissues.

"We're not just digitizing existing processes," says Dani Younisian, Abracadabra's CEO. "We're creating a new standard for implant-supported restorations that combines our deep understanding of dental biomechanics with cutting-edge machine learning. This system will make advanced implant prosthetics accessible to more dentists and, consequently, more patients worldwide."

The development of AbraCAD reflects Israel's unique innovation ecosystem. The project brings together expertise from various fields - dental surgery, prosthetics, computer-aided design, and machine learning - in a way that exemplifies the "Startup Nation's" collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Looking ahead, Abracadabra plans to expand the system's capabilities to include fully autonomous prosthetic treatment planning. The company is building a comprehensive database of dental measurements and restoration outcomes that will train AI models to generate optimal treatment plans automatically. This could democratize access to advanced implant prosthetics by enabling less experienced dentists to achieve results comparable to those of seasoned specialists.

The impact of this innovation extends beyond technical advancement. For patients, it means more predictable outcomes, fewer complications, and potentially lower costs as implant restoration becomes more standardized and efficient. For dentists, it provides a powerful tool that combines the latest in digital technology with proven biomechanical principles.

As Abracadabra prepares to launch AbraCAD, the company continues to embody the spirit of "tikkun olam" - the Jewish concept of repairing the world - that has guided its work from the beginning. Through technological innovation, they're not just creating new dental solutions; they're working to make advanced implant restorations more accessible and predictable for patients worldwide.

The development of AbraCAD represents another chapter in Israel's ongoing contribution to global healthcare innovation. As Dr. Harel notes, "This system is about more than just dental technology - it's about transforming lives through innovation, one smile at a time."

The company is currently in the midst of a fundraising round aimed at international expansion. "Our current funding round will be dedicated to bringing Abracadabra's revolutionary implant-supported restorations to dentists worldwide," says Younisian.
