President-elect Donald Trump has expressed strong support for Pete Hegseth, calling him "a winner" despite reports suggesting that Hegseth's nomination for Secretary of Defense may be facing challenges in the Senate.
Recent media coverage has highlighted potential obstacles to Hegseth's confirmation, citing allegations related to his personal and professional conduct. There have even been indications that Trump is considering alternative candidates for the Army veteran and television personality's position.
However, Trump affirmed his commitment to Hegseth on Friday, asserting that his support is substantial and more robust than what the media suggests. "Pete Hegseth is doing very well. His support is strong and deep, much more so than the Fake News would have you believe," Trump stated on Truth Social.
He praised Hegseth's educational background, noting his degrees from Princeton and Harvard, and emphasized his military mindset. "He will be a fantastic, high-energy Secretary of Defense, one who leads with charisma and skill. Pete is a WINNER, and nothing can change that!!!"
Additionally, The Guardian reported that Trump’s transition team has not identified three Republican senators who are firmly opposed to Hegseth’s confirmation. Hegseth has been actively meeting with senators this week to secure their votes amidst allegations of sexual assault and issues with alcohol.
During a visit to the Capitol on Wednesday, Hegseth mentioned that Trump encouraged him to "keep going, keep fighting." He also penned an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, aiming to clarify his position and counter what he described as a "manufactured media takedown." "I look forward to an honest confirmation hearing with our distinguished senators — not a show trial in the press," he wrote.
Amid these developments, there were reports that Trump was contemplating replacing Hegseth with Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis. Meanwhile, Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, a veteran and another potential nominee for the defense secretary role, indicated on Thursday that she is not yet prepared to support Hegseth, according to Politico.
