Seven Iraqi border guards were injured in an explosion at an ammunition depot that caught fire in the sixth area, west of the Nineveh province, near the Syrian border, while the reasons for the explosion are not yet known.
The Directorate of Civil Defense in the Nineveh Governorate announced yesterday evening, Thursday, that the fire was extinguished in the ammunition warehouse in the village of Umm al-Diban in the Albayj district near the border with Syria, while a security source confirmed that seven members of the border guard, including an officer with the rank of major, were injured as a result of the fire that broke out in the warehouse
The Iraqi "Nineveh" agency quoted a source in the Nineveh police as saying that the two border guards were seriously injured, while the injuries of five others varied between burns, fractures and smoke suffocation.
The source at the Nineveh police said that the reasons for the explosion are unknown, whether it was an explosion as a result of an attack or an explosion as a result of high temperatures, and noted that the security forces blocked off the place of the explosion and began investigating the incident.
It is worth noting that the Popular Mobilization Forces (al-Hashd al-Sha'abi) loyal to Iran and Iraqi army forces are widely deployed along the Syria-Iraq border, for security reasons, and in particular to prevent the infiltration of ISIS members, after reports of the escape of a number of leaders and members of the organization from prison.
The border between Syria and Iraq stretches for about 605 km, and is connected to a wide desert that stretches from al-Hasqa in the east to the eastern countryside of Homs district, and in front of it on the Iraqi side is the area of Mosul and Inbar. This area includes a third of the territory of Syria and a quarter of the territory of Iraq.
Note: It is possible that Iran decided to hide "special" weapons that are making their way west into the hands of Hezbollah in Iraqi army warehouses for fear of "mysterious" attacks on weapons and ammunition warehouses carried out by both the Western coalition and Israel.
