According to recent reports, President Biden still harbors regrets about withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race last summer, a decision he made under increasing pressure from fellow Democrats.Β
In conversations with close associates, Biden has expressed his belief that he could have won against Trump in the upcoming election, despite his challenging debate performance in June and low approval ratings that contributed to his departure from the race, as noted by the Washington Post.
Following a debate on June 27, calls for him to step aside intensified, with many Democrats advocating for a different candidate to take his place. At the same time, Biden experienced a significant decline in campaign funding as donors grew skeptical about his chances of defeating Trump.
He officially exited the race on July 21, later endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, who had limited time—just over three months—to prepare for the election. Ultimately, Trump won against Harris by a margin of 2.2 million votes.
Throughout this process, Biden has been careful not to place blame on Harris, while maintaining to his aides that he believes he could have secured a victory. Even at the time of his withdrawal, he was confident in his ability to beat Trump, the same opponent he triumphed over in the 2020 election, as reported by the New York Times in September.
