For Families Day 2025, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics released the data on Israeli families for 2023.
In 2023, there were approximately 2.3 million families in Israel, compared to approximately 1.96 million a decade ago, in 2014.
The average Israeli family consists of 3.71 people.
The most common family type in Israel was a couple with children, the youngest of whom was up to 17 years old (about 47%).
The percentage of childless couples in Jewish families (29%) is higher than the percentage in Arab families (about 12%).
About 2.99 million children up to the age of 17 lived in families. Most of them lived with both parents (about 91%), and the rest lived with only one parent.
About 12% of all families with children up to the age of 17 are single-parent families (144 thousand). About 85% of these families are headed by a woman. About 23% of all single mothers with children up to the age of 17 are single.
In large cities with 100,000 or more residents, the highest percentage of families that include couples with children up to the age of 17 was in Beit Shemesh – about 68%, compared to about 47% for the national average.
In the large cities, the highest average number of people per family is found in Beit Shemesh (4.72), Bnei Brak (4.71) and Jerusalem (4.29), compared to the national average of 3.71.
Arab families are larger than Jewish families. Among Jews, the average number of people per family increases as the level of religiosity increases, while among Arabs, families that maintain a traditional lifestyle are the largest.
94% of couples in Israel are married couples, and the rest (about 118,000 couples) are couples living together without marriage.
